Melissa is certified math and special education teacher with seven years of teaching experience in NYC schools. She graduated magna cum laude from Lafayette College and completed a Master of Science in Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum: Math from Drexel University. She holds a New York State Professional Certificate in Secondary Math (Grades 7-12), a Professional Extension Certificate in Middle School Math (Grades 5-6), a Students with Disabilities Professional Generalist Certificate (Grades 7-12), and a Students with Disabilities Professional Extension Certificate (Grades 5-6)

Melissa adapts her teaching methods to the learning styles of her students. She has trained in Multisensory Math techniques and Singapore Math. She currently works as a head math teacher at an upper school for twice-exceptional children. She often uses manipulatives to enhance understanding. Increased sensory inputs result in better understanding and retention when students learn new concepts. 

Kirsten is an enthusiastic educator with four years of lead teaching experience. Kirsten obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Nazarene College and went on to receive her Master’s degree from Touro University in Childhood Education & Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6). She is certified in New York State in both General and Special Education for grades 1-6. Prior to moving to New York City, Kirsten served as a 1st grade student teacher, day camp director, and 2nd grade teaching intern combating summer learning loss in low-income, high-need communities. Most recently Kirsten taught 4th grade for four years in an integrated co-teaching classroom for a high performing charter school network in New York City. Kirsten consistently worked with classes containing up to 30% students requiring Individualized Education Plans. She served as a grade level leader for a team of 5 fourth grade teachers, providing coaching to other adults and spearheading the curriculum planning across the grade. Beginning in the fall of 2022 Kirsten will teach 3rd grade literacy and math at a private school on the Upper East Side.

Danielle graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree from SUNY Cortland and Master’s Degree from Long Island University obtaining her certifications in Childhood Education (Birth-Grade 6), Students with Disabilities (Birth-Grades 6), and Health Education (Grades K-12). She tutors students ranging from Pre-K through 6th Grade with different ability levels. As a 2nd grade Special Education ICT Teacher in a Long Island public school, Danielle helps strengthen individualized needs in mathematics. She provides hands-on experiences by utilizing manipulatives and encourages an interactive way for students to learn. She builds upon number sense, patterns, representation, measurement, spatial sense, estimation, and problem solving.

Elizabeth graduated from Marist College with a bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education & Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6) as well as she earned a master’s degree from Touro University in Childhood Education & Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6). She is a member of both the International Honor Society in Education and Psychology.

Elizabeth spent the first part of her career as a Special Education teacher within schools across New York City. As a teacher, she mentored new teachers, served as a grade-level team leader, and led several professional development training sessions for teachers and families. Elizabeth worked with a team of professionals to design elementary math curriculum aligned with NYS Common Core Standards. Elizabeth worked as an Assistant Principal at the elementary level where she worked with students to cultivate their love of learning while building their self confidence as they work to meet their individualized goals.

Lynsey is a certified General Education teacher who has successfully prepared students for NY State exams for the last 7 years. She has prepared students for both Math and ELA state exams by using effective tools, strategies, and scaffolds for test-taking tips. Lynsey is a highly effective teacher based on her students’ NY State test scores and teaching practices. Lynsey has experience in grades 1-5 and has worked summer school, after school, and with Math and STEM intervention programs.

Lynsey specializes in inquiry-based learning as well as focusing on every child’s needs, strengths, and unique ways of learning. Lynsey has attended a variety of professional development workshops and is continuously collaborating with peers to master teaching test prep material as well as implementing new mathematical techniques. She strongly believes that providing students with ways that help them learn, in ways that are unique to them, helps them to succeed. Teaching children multiple problem- solving strategies is one of her strong suits and ensuring students understand problems, instead of just memorizing them, is an essential learning skill she strongly believes in.

David spent four years teaching math in California public schools to full classrooms of students, as well as small groups of students needing additional support. David specialized in working with students who had ADHD, dyscalculia, and other learning disabilities. In 2020, he transitioned to teaching individual students remotely.

David has always loved math, and strives to share that joy with his students by making math fun through games and real life applications. He teaches his students to understand why math works the way it does, in addition to helping them to develop automaticity.

David conducts informal assessments to determine the best starting point for teaching. Math builds upon itself, so he ensures that his students are solid with foundational concepts before moving onto more advanced topics. David utilizes a variety of approaches to teaching, depending on each student’s learning style, such as multi-sensory with manipulatives; visual with images and drawing; mnemonics and reminders; rote practice; discussion based learning; and learning through games and activities.

Brian earned his Masters in Teaching at the University of Georgia with a program focus on constructivist principles within early childhood education. These principles guide his lesson plans which create experiences for students to construct their understanding through important ‘A-ha’ moments. Brian also recognizes the important role of direct and explicit instruction, which is part of a balanced approach to helping any child grow to their potential.

Brian utilizes explicit and cognitively guided instruction (CGI) to drive toward student understanding. CGI meets a child where they are at developmentally and naturally facilitates the transition from concrete to abstract understanding. Brian believes it is essential that children truly master concrete mathematics before moving into the representational and abstract stages. This is accomplished by utilizing a variety of manipulatives and hands on activities and only moving on to new levels of understanding and more advanced strategies when the child is ready. Brian has experience implementing Contexts for Learning Mathematics and TERC Investigations; two powerful curriculums that help children learn math concepts and skills through interesting, real world contexts.

Julia graduated from State University of New York at Fredonia with a Bachelor of Science in Childhood and Special Education (Grades 1-6). She then received her M.S.Ed. in Literacy Education (Grades 1-6) from Nazareth College. Julia has over eight years of experience working with students with ASD, ADHD, processing delays, and learning disabilities. During this time, she has taught in a general education setting (ages -12), special education settings (ages 4-14), and as a literacy specialist (worked with ages 4-14). Throughout her years of teaching, she has utilized a multitude of programs including: Dimensions, GoMath, Math Expressions, and IXL.

During her individual math sessions, she first assesses the student’s abilities using an initial assessment. She then chooses a curriculum that best suits the needs of the student and utilizes a multi-sensory approach to learning. Her lessons include the use of manipulatives and hands on learning techniques in order to engage the student and help them acquire new mathematical skills. Over time, Julia will continue to check in with the progress each student has made using formative and summative assessments.
